The Marion Cub Scouts Pack 32 Soap-box Derby took place on March 21, from noon until 3:00 pm. After a three-year hiatus, Marion Cub Scouts hit the streets with their scout-made wooden derby cars, to vie for a chance to be the fastest den in the pack.
"The race director this year is Will Poirier. He is doing a great job coordinating all the car builds and the permits for the street, materials, etc," said Doug Breault, Cubmaster for Pack 32. "It's a lot of work." The race starts at the top of Holmes Street, with parts of the street being closed on that day to make way for the race.
Scouts lined up in their cars, which were then released and began rolling and then racing down the hill to a finish line a couple hundred yards down the street, Breault said. Each den (Tigers/Wolves, Bears, Webelos I and Webelos II) have their own car and every scout raced multiple times. In the end, Breault noted, the fastest car/den won, and all got trophies. That den was the Webelos. Two cars raced at a time. The first one to the finish line won. All the scouts in the winning den got trophies. "The Soapbox is important because it gets the entire pack together for a spirited competition at the end of the scouting season, racing in cars which they have worked on," said Breault.
With the scouting season winding down, Pack 32 is on the lookout for more scouts to join the ranks for the coming year which will include overnight camping, a day at Carabiners, a campout and game at Pawsox Stadium, possibly sleepover return to the U.S.S. Massachusetts at Battleship Cove, and much more as the schedule fills out. Now is the perfect time to join Cub Scouts.
